This year’s Charter Night will be Friday, Feb. 24th, at the Fiesta Resort in Tempe.

Details

The address is 2100 South Priest Drive, Tempe. We will meet in Building C of the Conference Center.

Social hour with cocktails begins at 6:00 PM. Dinner and ceremonies begin at 7:00 PM.

Dress is coat and tie for the gentlemen and whatever the equivalent is for the ladies.

Each TSR member will be charged $35 whether attending or not. Please notify Chris Sar ASAP if you are attending and whether you will be bringing guests. Spouses and significant others are very welcome.

We will present this year’s Howard Pyle Award. The food will be good. Dwayne Knuth’s jokes will be … well, uneven.

Charter Night is our weekly meeting for the 24th, just in the evening instead of in the morning.

A Thorny Morning at the Zoo

The Saturday morning rose trimmers from Tempe South Rotary swept into the zoo and made those rose bushes shape up. Not too much blood…although a little. Those thorns were sharp!

Denise Wagner on Rhino Poaching

Denise Wagner of the Phoenix Zoo and the Phoenix Chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers spoke about the devastation of rhino poaching, with shocking photos of massacred rhinos. Poaching is unfortunately expected to accelerate in 2012. Some rhinos are on the verge of extinction.

We are having a great celebration on Sunday, January 29th at the Margaret T. Hance Building, 1203 North 3rd Street, from 3:00PM to 6:00PM. You can take the light rail or find parking just off 3rd Street and the Freeway.

We are lighting the Freeport building with the “ROTARY END POLIO NOW” logo. It is spectacular and shouldn’t be missed. Join with your fellow Rotarians and celebrate our achievements:

No polio cases in India for the past year

We have met the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation challenge of raising $200,000

We are putting on our first major statewide PR campaign for the Rotary End Polio Now campaign

We have you to thank for all the good going our way

Let’s all start our 2012 year with some enthusiasm for our accomplishments and being in Rotary. We’ll have food, entertainment and fun, and past R.I. President Ray Klinginsmith will be there to cheer us on.

Rose Trimming Project To Be Feb. 4

Gary Law has organized our annual rose trimming project for this coming Saturday, Feb. 4.

We will meet at the entrance to the zoo at 7:45 AM and spend the morning trimming in the rose gardens. We will probably finish before 11:00 AM. Bring gloves and clippers if you can. Wear close-toed shoes.

Skill level – from 0 to “know all”. According to Gary, Debi will be happy to tell you how to do it….(she’s a pro).

We’ve done this for the past 9 years and is a great asset to the garden. Last year this was a very enjoyable service project. Fun. Educational. Therapeutic.

You are more than welcome to stay after and enjoy a day at the zoo.

Mayoral Candidates Visit Tempe South Rotary

All three 2012 mayoral candidates came to breakfast with us at Friday’s meeting, January 13th. Jay Spradling conducted a Q&A with each candidate: Linda Spears, Michael Monti, and Mark Mitchell.

All candidates spoke well of their visons for Tempe.

After the formal program, Chris Sar asked each candidate, “What can we do as Rotarians?” Answers varied around a common theme:

Spears: Link organizations on the Tempe website for better inter-organization communications with neighborhood associations.

Mitchell: Continue to do what we already do with Rotary clubs, especially regarding youth services.

Monti: Engage Rotary and other civic clubs to improve neighborhoods with, for example, door to door services.

Tempe South Rotary President Craig Busskohl presents a token of the club’s appreciation to Lorraine Nelson.

According to Craig, Lorraine gets up at 3:30 AM every Friday to be sure that we have a gourmet breakfast and Kona coffee ready for our weekly meetings. Highly reliable. Like clockwork. Thank you, Lorraine!
